Mycteria ibis
This large stork with its long, decurved yellow bill is a fairly regular sighting at rivers, lakes and estuaries.
We first recorded it in September 2010 while visiting Ndumo Game Reserve for the first time. We had great views of a breeding colony while doing the “Nyamithi Pan” walk with Joseph Gumede.
Mkhombo Dam Nature Reserve is one of the more reliable sites to see this species (within 2 hours drive from Johanneburg).
