Batis fratrum
We first recorded this batis in April 2012 while staying at Tembe Elephant Park in the far north of KwaZulu Natal. Knowing that this batis is restricted to lowland and coastal forest, we knew we had to convince the Tembe guides to take us into the quiet sand forest as opposed to the usual “tourist game drive” routes.
Fortunately, we had fellow birders staying at Tembe with us and were able to secure one of the game vehicles for an afternoon drive. Within half an hour of entering the forest, our guide picked up the Woodward’s’ call and we soon had a beautiful male in our viewfinders. This must rate as my most memorable batis sighting to date!
