Wing-snapping or Ayres’ Cisticola

Cisticola ayresii

This very short-tailed cisticola is best identified in summer when it is displaying approximately 30 to 50 metres above the ground, and can be distinguished from its peers.

My best sighting of this species was in November 2011 with Lucky Ngwenya in Wakkerstroom. While looking for Rudd’s and Botha’s Lark, we experienced two of them displaying overhead.
