Hirundo albigularis
This intra-African migrant, which is closely associated with water, is a common sighting on most summer bird trips. Its white throat, rufous frons and blue-black breast band distinguishes it from similar swallow species.
We first recorded this species in Umhlanga on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal. Reliable spots for it include the bridge at Kgomo Kgomo in the North West Province and Marievale Bird Sanctuary (specifically the Hadeda Hide) near Nigel.
