Tinkling Cisticola

Cisticola rufilatus

Found in semi arid scrubland and shrub, this cisticola can be distinguished from other family members by its rufous crown and ear coverts and distinct, pale supercilium. There are 3 subspecies in southern Africa, each of them being shy and easily overlooked.

I first recorded this sought after cisticola in July 2012 while on a 4 hour, guided bird walk near Shamvura in northern Namibia. We were looking for souza’s shrike and had just left the vehicle when this striking cisticola jumped up in front of us.
