Striped Kingfisher

Halcyon chelicuti

The smallest and least colourful of the non-aquatic kingfishers; the striped kingfisher, is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa, occupying a wide variety of open woodland and grassland habitats. That said, it is not a species that I bump into often.

We first encountered this species in Ndumo Game Reserve in September 2011, and this remains our best sighting to date.
