Cisticola galactotes (near-endemic)
This near-endemic is restricted to marshy areas along the lowlands and coastal plains from KwaZulu Natal to Mozambique. Its grey brown tail and bright rufous wing panel separate it from other similar species.
I first recorded this cisticola in January 2011 while walking towards the Sappi bird hide in Stanger, north coast KwaZulu Natal. It had been raining and the bird was sunning itself in order to dry off. Given the “wet-look” it took me a while to confirm the identification, but it was to be my first rufous-winged cisticola.
