Hirundo semirufa
This large, beautiful, red-rumped swallow occurs from West Africa and the DRC through Angola and Zambia to southern Africa. It is an intra-African breeding migrant, arriving in southern Africa around August to September, and departing between April and May for its non-breeding grounds near the equator.
We first recorded this species in September 2010 while staying at Butjani Lodge near Rust de Winter. A very reliable spot for this species is the Kgomo Kgomo town in the North West Province.
