Red-and-yellow Barbet

Trachyphonus erythrocephalus

This striking black, red and yellow spotted barbet with its red beak, red face and distinguishing white comma behind the eye, is locally common and widespread in dry bush and woodland.

We recorded this stunning barbet in September 2011 while investigating the Tsavo West National Park in southern Kenya. We saw the nominate sub-species, one of two  sub-species in Kenya, which has a red face and dark crown.
