Montagu’s Harrier

Circus pygargus

I first recorded this graceful, summer migrant in January 2013 while birding the Devon area with Skye Hartog. We were driving along the “Klippan Link” road when Skye suddenly shouted “harrier” and there it was; a female montagu’s harrier, crossing the road in front of us.

If one sighting of this rare bird was not enough, we also witnessed another two birds engaged in an aerial battle later in the day.

I have found Devon, during February and March, a very reliable site for this sought after species.
