Magpie Mannikin

Lonchura fringilloides

This rare breeding species in South Africa is by far the largest of the southern African mannikins. Despite its size, you will also definitely know it when you see it, given its very thick bill.

I only know of one reliable spot for these large mannikins and that is in the heart of Tzaneen, in the garden of an old age villa. Thus, to see them again and improve on my previous photographs, I visited this area for a second time in December 2012.

It is quite an odd sensation sitting on the pavement, staring into an old age home, with a rather large camera and lens in one’s hands. I had to wander what the locals were thinking! But despite the odd environment, I got excellent views of both adults and juveniles and had a lot of fun while doing so.
