Little Tern

Sternula albifrons

This is one of the smallest terns in our region and is best distinguished from the smaller damara tern by its pale grey (to white) rump & tail and shorter, straighter bill.

I first recorded this tiny tern, a mere 22 to 24cm in length, in February 2013 while visiting the West Coast National Park with Rousseau Lotter. It was very easy to pick out from the hordes of common terns, given its small size and yellow bill with a black tip (which it has during the breeding season).
