Little Crake

Porzana parva

When this unexpected crake pitched up at a local pond in Clovelly near Simonstown in the Western Cape, I was extremely excited at the prospect of seeing it, but had to wait 6 nail biting days before a pre-planned busines trip would take me to Cape Town.

Fortunately this new addition to the South African bird list, decided to wait until my arrival, and I was able to get awesome views of what turned out to be a very cooperative and relaxed female.

Its arrival in South Africa represented a classic case of ‘reverse migration’ for a winter migrant that has, since this record, only been seen as far south as Ethiopia.
