Karoo Chat

Cercomela schlegelii

Larger and longer-tailed than other similar chats, the karoo chat is decisively separated from its peers by its diagnostic blackish, triangular central tail.

I first recorded this species with Gordon Botha in September 2011, while investigating the arid and stony, Tankwa Karoo birding route. Since then Eileen and I have seen it on a number of occasions in the Karoo as well as Namibia.
