Harlequin Quail

Coturnix delegorguei

I have always wanted to see this species, so when I heard that some had been seen on the “Klippan Link” road in Devon in mid January 2013, Skye Hartog and I made a bee-line to the area to see if we could find them.

After searching the area for much of the morning, we were on our second drive down “Klippan Link” road when Skye suddenly noticed movement to the left of the vehicle. We were both treated to awesome views of a male and female quail flying two meters from the vehicle. The significant contrast in colour between the two sexes and the dark colouration of the male confirmed the identification of this beautiful species.

They landed 20 metres in front of the car and eventhough we were able to flush them for a second time, I was unable to get decent photographs (not even half decent). Oh well, this just means another exciting trip to a beauitful area to look for a beautiful quail.
