Passer motitensis
This large sparrow spends time in dry, wooded savannah and can be best told from the smaller, house sparrow by its heavier bill and chestnut (not grey) rump.
We first laid eyes on these special sparrows in May 2012 while visiting Mokaikai in the Waterberg for the first time. A fairly reliable spot for this species, close to Gauteng, is the village of Kgomo Kgomo.
