Gray’s Lark

Ammomanopsis grayi (near-endemic)

This small, plain lark is near endemic to Namibia and is found on desert gravel plains.

We bumped into this unmistakable¬†species in July 2012 while travelling along the approach road to Sossusvlei. I had all but given up on birding for the day, after trying for over an hour to find dune lark at Elim Dune and failing horribly, when we stopped to take a closer look at a Ruppel’s Korhaan. Suddenly I noticed a small, lark-like shape ahead of us and there they were; a family of gray’s larks moving across the harsh, pebble-laden landscape. What an awesome suprize!
