European Bee-eater

Merops apiaster

This large, distinctively coloured bee-eater is a common, palearctic-breeding migrant that arrives around October and leaves in March.

We first recorded this common summer migrant in March 2010 while enjoying a picnic in Delta Park, Johannesberg. In summer it can be seen throughout most of southern Africa.
