Dusky Indigobird

Vidua funerea

In South Africa, this indigobird’s (v. f. funereal) ivory beak and red legs and feet are diagnostic. However, just to confuse matters, when ones heads further north, this species legs become pinkish-white legs (similar to purple indigobird) and one then has to use their call to ensure correct identification. Similar to cuckoos, indigobirds are also brood parasites and this particular species uses African firefinch as its brood host.

We first recorded this species in March 2011 at Hluhluwe Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu Natal and see them regularly in our parent’s garden on the south coast of KZN.
