D’Arnaud’s Barbet

Trachyphonus darnaudii

This small, east African barbet is made up of three races (with variable levels of black on the crown and throat) and occurs in semi-arid bushed and wooded grassland from sea level to 2000 metres.

We first recorded the nominate race of this interesting species in September 2011 at El Karama Eco Ranch near Nanyuki, Kenya. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to get a decent photograph.
