Amadina fasciata
This striking, heavily barred finch is a locally common resident and nomad in dry, broadleafed woodland. The male of this species is easily identified by its pinkish-red throat band.
I first set eyes on these tiny birds with Skye Hartog in March 2013. We stumbled upon a flock of them while exploring the dry, Kgomo Kgomo floodplain. I had to leopard crawl towards them in order to get close enough for decent photographs.
