Estrilda astrild
This pretty waxbill with its red eye stripe and belly patch is a regular sighting in southern Africa, especially near water. We first recorded this species in January 2010 while staying at the Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Drakensberg.
Great spots to see them (close to Joahnnesburg) include the “Zaagkuildrift to Kgomo Kgomo” birding route and Marievale Bird Sanctuary near Nigel.
