This small, compact flycatcher is a rare, Palearctic migrant to woodland (especially miombo woodland) in southern Africa.
I almost missed seeing this species when it unexpectedly arrived in Robindale, Randburg in December 2012. I was hoping to get to Robindale on the Thursday morning (two days after the first sighting) but woke up very ill and could only make it to the house in the late afternoon. I almost delayed my visit to the next day, but when I saw storm clouds descending on Johannesburg, I knew I had to get there before it was too late. Being only the 9th record for South Africa I am glad I made the effort, as a huge storm blew through Robindale that evening and this was the last time the bird was seen. Thank you Malcolm Wilson for your hospitality!
