Caspian Plover

Charadrius asiaticus

This medium sized summer visitor is often confused with juvenile kittlitz’s plovers. However, its bigger size, complete grey-brown breasted band, more prominent supercilium and dumpier appearance make it possible to distinguish from this and other similar looking plovers.

This is a difficult bird to connect with in South Africa. Thus, when I heard that one had been spotted at Kgomo Kgomo in October 2012, I took the first opportunity I could to pay the floodplain a visit. After much searching (and help from a fellow birder) I was lucky enough to see and photograph it.
