Cape Vulture

Gyps coprotheres (endemic)

The cape vulture is larger than the white-backed vulture with little contrast between its coverts and flight feathers. It also has distinctive blue skin patches and yellow eyes.

We first recorded this vulnerable species in October 2010 while hiking in Magaliesberg, South Africa. A very reliable site to see and photograph this bird is the vulture hide at Giants Castle in the central Drakensberg.
