Phalacrocorax capensis (near-endemic)
This near-threatened, marine cormorant is slightly smaller and less robust than the bank cormorant. The breeding adult’s yellow gular patch and turquoise eye is diagnostic.
This species is a common resident on the rocks outside our parent’s house in Llandudno, Cape Town. We first recorded them here in February 2010, but since then have seen them all along the east and west coasts of South Africa.
