Pterocles burchelli (near-endemic)
This small, compact sandgrouse is particularly common in kalahari sands. We first recorded it in April 2011 while staying on a concession near to Nxai Pans in Botswana.
A reliable spot to find them in South Africa is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. All you need to do is visit a waterhole in winter, preferably between Nossop and Groot Kolk, around 9am and you are bound to see flocks of them arriving to drink.
