Crithagra sulphuratus
This large, greenish canary has a yellow supercilium and a thick bill, and is a common resident in woodland, gardens and mesic thickets (in eastern, southern Africa)
I first recorded this thick-billed canary in September 2010 while visiting our parents on the south coast of KwaZulu Natal. I had just set off on a walk around the surrounding area, when I noticed a canary with a bigger than usual bill, sitting on a telephone wire above the garden.
I soon realised that this canary was different to the region’s more common yellow-fronted canary, and was in fact my first sighting of a brimstone.
