Black-browed Albatross

Thalassarche melanophris

Named after its dark eye-brow, this near-threatened species is a fairly common sighting on pelagic trips out of the Western Cape. Migrating at a speed of approximately 48 km/h, these incredible birds make their way from South Georgia (and to a much lesser extent the Falkland and Kerguelen Islands) to the Western Cape.

I recorded a couple of these albatrosses with Gordon Botha and his family, while on my first cape pelagic in September 2011.
