Black-shouldered Kite

Elanus axillaris

These striking kites are very common throughout much of southern Africa and can be easily distinguished from other birds of prey by their overall white colouration and dark shoulder patches.

You will not battle to find these kites in South Africa, as most road trips will likely involve a sighting of them hovering over grasslands or cultivated lands.
