Cuculus clamosus
This medium-sized, cuckoo species is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. It prefers Acacia woodland and relatively thick forest, where it can be difficult to locate in the upper reaches of the tree canopy, singing its monotonous and highly repetitive call.
On the 25th February 2011, Skye Hartog and I had just finished birding “Crake Road” along the well known Zaagkuildrift to Kgomo Kgomo birding route, when we came across my first ever black cuckoo. This birding route never dissapoints and this day was no exception.
