This common intra-African migrant is bigger than other martins and spends its time in grassland and other low vegetation.
We first recorded this broad-winged martin in March 2010 while exploring Wakkerstroom in Mpumulanga. A reliable spot for seeing and photographing this species is Rietvlei Nature Reserve. In summer they are common along South Road, which leads to Marais Dam picnic site and bird hide. (The Vlaklaagte area near Bronkhorstspruit is another reliable location for this bird)
