Buteo augur
This stocky, red-tailed buzzard comes in two distinct colour morphs; the most common, light morph is largely white below with black upper parts and chequered panels across the flight feathers, while the less common, dark morph has largely black underparts and is associated with highland areas.
We first recorded this eye-turning buzzard in September 2011 while staying in the Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya . Our first southern african sighting was in July 2012 near Grootberg in northern Namibia.
