African Quailfinch

Ortygospiza atricollis

This exquisite, little finch with its barred breast and flanks is a highlight of any birding trip and a very tricky customer to photograph. They favour short, open grassland especially near water, as well as agricultural fields.

We first recorded this species in March 2010 while birding at Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga. Superb areas to see this bird are the roads south of Devon and Mkhombo Dam Nature Reserve. To read a blog about my most expensive photograph (of a quailfinch) follow this link: My most expensive photograph
