These distinctive birds must rank as my favourites out of all the ducks and geese. Their stunning plumage and small size, together with the beautiful, lilly struden lakes they occupy, make them fantastic photographic subjects.
We first recorded these exquisite ducks in April 2010 while on a canoe trip along the Kosi Bay lake system in northern KwaZulu Natal.
A very reliable spot for this species is Muirhead Dams in the Soutpansberg. I have been there on 3 separate occasions and have seen the male and female goose together each time. There is a hide on the main dam, which not only affords good views of the geese but can make for great photographic opportunities.
