African Hoopoe

Upupa africana

This iconic bird with its black-tipped crest, decurved bill and black, white and orange plumage is as unique as it is beautiful and be seen throughout much of southern Africa.

I have memories of this species from when I was a youngster growing up in Johannesburg but first recorded it in March 2010 while on a bird walk in the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.
