African Emerald Cuckoo

Chrysococcyx cupreus

The African emerald cuckoo is without a doubt the most striking cuckoo southern Africa has to offer. The males stand out with their iridescent green back and head, and vibrant yellow breast.

This species generally prefers riparian and evergreen forest, dense woodland and moist savanna. We first set eyes on this sectacular cuckoo in April 2012 while visiting Tembe Elephant Park for the first time. Since then I have seenĀ males, females and juvenilesĀ in Magoeboskloof, but am still struggling to get a decent photograph.
