Aviceda cuculoides
This medium-sized raptor is generally scarce in southern Africa and this together with its unique features, make it a special species to see on any birding outing.
I first recorded this awesome raptor in February 2011 while visiting Kurisa Moya in the Magoeboskloof. The best place that I know for this species is the top of Rhinkals Weg in the Seringveld Conservancy. Look for them perched at the top of dead trees, as they serach for their reptile and insect prey.
