African Broadbill

Smithornis capensis

This unique, flycatcher-like bird is resident in lowland, riparian and sand forest and is well worth hunting down, if not for its distinctive looks, then for its exciting display flight.

After two failed attempts at this stocky, often inconspicuous bird, I finally saw it in December 2012 with Samson Maludzi at the Roodewal Forest in Soutpansberg. After searching for almost 2 hours, we suddenly heard the bird’s distinctive call and within minutes had found what we had been looking for; a brilliant male broadbill in clear view.
